The collection of the library of the New Synagogue Berlin Foundation - Centrum Judaicum include books that originated from Nazi looted property. Features such as bookplates, stamps, autographs and dedications indicate the former owners of the books. These include private individuals and institutions that were persecuted by the National Socialists between 1933 and 1945 for political and/or "racial" reasons and forced to leave these books behind before emigration or deportation.

These books - mainly Judaica in German, Hebrew and Yiddish - came to the library of the Foundation New Synagogue Berlin in the early 1990s through transfers from the Central and Regional Library Berlin and the Berlin State Library to the Foundation New Synagogue Berlin in order to use them to support the development of the Foundation's library. A smaller number of such books were given to the Foundation New Synagogue by citizens who found them, for example, during renovation work in attics or when breaking up their grandparents' households.
