The Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem for the Study of German-Jewish History and Culture (est. 1955) is an international academic research institute established to promote research into German and Central European Jewry in the modern era. The library of the LBI Jerusalem contains about 13,000 items dating back to the early 19th century. The journeys that led the books from Europe to Jerusalem couldn’t be more diverse. About half of the collection’s books are estimated to contain traces of their former owners.

These provenance marks will be documented as a part of “German-Jewish Heritage Relocated”, a joint research project of LBI Jerusalem and the Leibniz Institute for Jewish History and Culture – Simon Dubnow in Leipzig. The resulting corpus of provenance data will enable us to study the translocation of German-Jewish cultural assets and their impact in their new surroundings.
