The Jewish Museum Berlin Foundation was established in 2001 and is directly funded by the German federal government. Its collection originates in the Jewish Department of the Berlin Museum, where objects and books began to be acquired specifically for this purpose in 1979. Since then, additional items have been acquired through gifts, the incorporation of collections and estates, and targeted purchases from specialized auction houses and antiquarian booksellers.

The Jewish Museum Berlin library now comprises approximately 15,000 volumes published before 1945. Preliminary spot checks have shown that some of these books contain provenance markings that may indicate a possible loss as a result of Nazi persecution.

Since 2023, the museum has had an established position for provenance research whose responsibilities include the systematic review of the entire collection. A comprehensive study of the library’s holdings is being planned.
